NY cannabis tracking deadline hits this week

New York’s legal cannabis market faces a major compliance deadline as mandatory seed‑to‑sale tracking begins Wednesday.

All licensed businesses that handle cannabis must register with the Metrc system, complete online training, and log inventory. The platform assigns QR codes to every plant and product, creating a digital trail meant to block illegal sales and boost safety.

Retailers get extra time to upload inventory, but they still must register now to keep selling. New shipments can’t move without tracking tags, which usually cost 10 cents each — though the state is offering a one‑time batch for free.

By March 31, every product on shelves must show a verified safety test.
