The New York Mets made their first notable move to address an overhauled offense on Saturday, agreeing to a two-year, $40 million deal with infielder Jorge Polanco, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Polanco, 32, arrives in Queens after spending the past two seasons with the Seattle Mariners. He enjoyed a productive 2024 campaign, finishing with 26 home runs, an .821 OPS and a career-best 134 OPS+, providing a boost to a lineup that lost significant firepower this offseason.
The signing comes after the departures of Pete Alonso, who signed with the Baltimore Orioles, and Brandon Nimmo, who was traded to the Texas Rangers.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Polanco is expected to spend most of his time at first base or as a DH.
Even after this move, New York is still exploring additions in the outfield, starting rotation, and bullpen after losing Edwin Díaz and Tyler Rogers in free agency.
