Transit gap sparks funding dispute in Yates County

A looming gap in public transportation has reignited tension between Yates County and its longtime transit provider, according to the Finger Lakes Times. Yates Transit Service says it can’t absorb losses while the county waits for RTS to launch service in about 18 months.

YTS’s county contract ends Dec. 31, and the agency says continuing service would cost about $40,000 a month. It has asked the county for roughly $488,000 to cover operating losses during the transition, citing insufficient state aid.

Some legislators acknowledged missteps in communication, while others pushed back on the timing of the request. The Legislature has not yet acted on the funding ask.
