Tompkins County adds diversity officer role to charter

Tompkins County legislators narrowly voted to make the Chief Equity and Diversity Officer a permanent position in the county charter, according to The Ithaca Voice.

The 8–7 vote followed a heated debate. Supporters said the move shows a commitment to equity, while opponents questioned the role’s impact and overlap with existing diversity efforts. The position remains vacant as the county continues its search.

Legislator Randy Brown switched his vote, securing the amendment’s passage. Critics noted opposition came mainly from white male legislators, sparking frustration from DEI advocates.
