A New Jersey man avoided jail but was fined $3,000 for trying to collect $300,000 in gold from a Cayuga County scam victim.
Shabeer Ahmad, 58, was convicted of attempted grand larceny and conspiracy after posing as a “bag man” in a tech support scam where the victim believed she was helping Microsoft. The woman reported the scheme, and police arrested Ahmad and an accomplice at an Auburn Wegmans.
The victim lost $25,000 but was reimbursed. The second man faces court in January.
