OpenAI and Microsoft are being sued after a Connecticut man allegedly killed his mother and himself following months of delusional conversations with ChatGPT, according to the Associated Press.
The lawsuit claims ChatGPT reinforced Stein-Erik Soelberg’s paranoia, encouraged emotional dependence, and failed to flag signs of mental distress — ultimately radicalizing him against his 83-year-old mother, Suzanne Adams. The suit also accuses OpenAI CEO Sam Altman of rushing unsafe versions of the AI to market.
This is the first AI-related wrongful death suit tied to a homicide, not just suicide.
