Tompkins County misses most housing goals

Tompkins County built just a fraction of the homes it hoped for by 2025, falling far short of key housing targets, according to The Ithaca Voice. Officials blame high construction costs, limited infrastructure, and a mismatch between available homes and what residents actually need.

Out of 3,000 planned single-family homes, only 646 were permitted. Affordable rentals and condos also lagged behind, while luxury units flourished. Renters now face costs 50% higher than nearby counties.

Planners say the next housing strategy will focus on what’s buildable and where local governments can step in to help.
