An environmental group is rejecting claims that a new chemical removal system will protect public health at New York’s largest landfill, according to the Finger Lakes Times. Seneca Lake Guardian says the PFAS-filtering LEEF System planned for Seneca Meadows in 2026 lacks proven results at large scale.
The landfill’s operator, SMI, says the system will treat toxic leachate on-site. But critics call it a PR move to secure a permit renewal and landfill expansion as the facility’s state approval is set to expire Dec. 31.
Advocates argue the only real solution is permanent closure.
