Two New York lawmakers want to end corporate spending in state elections — and they think they’ve found a legal path to do it, according to Capital Tonight.
Assemblymember Micah Lasher and Sen. Kristen Gonzalez introduced a bill that would ban election-related corporate spending by redefining corporate charters. The move challenges the 2010 Citizens United ruling, which gave corporations free speech rights similar to individuals.
Lasher, who’s also running for Congress, says states have the power to set corporate limits — and New York could lead the way.
