Now that the first snow has hit Waterloo, village officials are reminding residents to clear their sidewalks — or face the consequences.
Under Village Code Article 2, Section 205-14, property owners or tenants must remove snow and ice from sidewalks before 9 a.m. after it falls. If it’s not possible to clear it right away, they must at least cover the area with sand or another safe material until conditions improve.
The village code also outlines what happens if residents don’t follow the rules. If the sidewalk isn’t cleared, the village can step in and do the job — then charge the property owner. That bill includes the cost of the work, plus a 50% surcharge for administrative costs. If the fee isn’t paid, it’s added to the property tax bill.
The goal, officials said in a public alert, is to keep walkways safe for all residents — especially students and those walking to school.
