Nurses push to unionize at Cayuga Medical, cite burnout and low morale

More than 70% of nurses at Cayuga Medical Center have signed on to unionize, driven by short staffing, frozen wages, and worsening conditions — and their momentum is drawing strong reactions, according to The Ithaca Voice.

Nurses say they’ve gone years without raises or PTO buybacks and regularly work through long shifts without breaks. Despite fears of retaliation — rooted in past union-busting — organizers say staff are fired up, especially after management eliminated pensions and leaned heavily on higher-paid travel nurses.

The hospital hasn’t agreed to voluntarily recognize the union, but workers are pressing ahead, confident in their support and determined to be heard.
