Deputies to collect toys and coats for Steuben County kids

Steuben County deputies will be filling patrol cars with toys and coats this weekend — all for a good cause.

Sheriff Jim Allard announced the annual “Toys for Tots Fill the Patrol Car” and “Coats for Kids” event will take place Saturday, Dec. 6, from 10 a.m. to noon at both the Erwin and Hornell Walmart plazas. The drive supports local children in need during the holiday season.

Deputies will be collecting new, unwrapped toys and new or gently used children’s coats. Donated coats will be distributed to school districts across Steuben County, while toys will go directly to families in need.

“This event has grown over the past five years,” Allard said, noting last year’s turnout was a powerful show of community support.

For those unable to attend in person, donation boxes are already set up in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office and the County Office Building in Bath.

Allard thanked the many people who help make the event a success — from donors to volunteers to those who simply stop by to support the effort.
