A longtime sheriff who shaped generations of deputies and served Schuyler County for more than three decades has died.
William E. Yessman, Jr., the county’s former sheriff, passed away Saturday, Nov. 29, according to the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office.
Before joining local law enforcement, Yessman served in the U.S. Coast Guard — a commitment to public service that carried through his entire career.
He joined the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office in 1985 and worked his way through the ranks, starting in the county jail and the 911 Communications Center. He later served on Road Patrol, and eventually held roles as Sergeant, Lieutenant, and K-9 Handler.

Yessman became Undersheriff under then-Sheriff Mike Maloney, before being elected sheriff in 2006. He led the department until his retirement in 2021.
Sheriff Kevin P. Rumsey and members of the department remembered Yessman as a steady and professional leader who had a deep impact on those around him. During his time in office, he mentored countless deputies, leaving a legacy that still shapes the department today.
After retiring, Yessman focused on family, especially time with his grandchildren. His love for both his family and community was known to all who met him.
The department extended its condolences to Yessman’s wife, Anne, his son, Sergeant Andrew Yessman, and the rest of the Yessman family. Funeral arrangements will be shared when available.
