Cayuga County bans abusers from owning pets

Cayuga County will now ban convicted animal abusers from owning pets and publish their names in an online registry, according to The Citizen.

The new law, passed unanimously by legislators, requires offenders to register with the sheriff’s office. First-time abusers stay on the list for 15 years; repeat offenders, for life. Service animal users are exempt.

Supporters, including the local SPCA, say it’s a commonsense move that boosts public safety and helps shelters and law enforcement share information.
