Syracuse football fires several coaches following three-win season

Syracuse is set to overhaul parts of its football staff after a disappointing 3-9 season, with multiple assistants reportedly dismissed following the end of the 2025 campaign.

According to Pete Nakos of On3 Sports, the Orange have parted ways with special teams coordinator Ricky Brumfield, offensive line coach Dale Williams, defensive backs coach Joe Schaefer, and co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Robert Wright. Brumfield had completed just one year with the program, while Williams, Schaefer, and Wright were in their second seasons after joining Fran Brown’s initial staff.

The moves continue a year of significant coaching reshuffling for Brown. Earlier in the season, Syracuse elevated Josh Gattis to wide receivers coach after moving on from Myles White, and reassigned Michael Johnson and Nunzio Campanile to new position groups—Johnson shifting to quarterbacks and Campanile to tight ends.

Despite the turnover, several key assistants remain in place. Defensive coordinator and assistant head coach Elijah Robinson, offensive coordinator and running backs coach Jeff Nixon, and edge coach Nick Williams continue to anchor the staff, along with Gattis, Johnson, and Campanile.

The shake-up comes at a crucial moment on the calendar. The early signing period begins December 3, and the transfer portal opens January 2. Syracuse enters this stretch with the nation’s No. 26 recruiting class, per 247Sports’ overall and composite rankings.
