The Buffalo Sabres endured another frustrating night on home ice, falling 5-0 to the New Jersey Devils on Friday at KeyBank Center. Despite generating a 42-23 edge in shots, Buffalo was shut out for the third time this season, all of which have come at home.
An announced sellout crowd of 19,070 briefly came to life early when Tage Thompson dropped the gloves with New Jersey’s Stefan Noesen, but the Sabres struggled to create much else. As the game slipped away, scattered boos and chants directed at general manager Kevyn Adams and owner Terry Pegula echoed through the arena.
The loss came two nights after a 4-2 defeat in Pittsburgh and kept Buffalo (9-11-4) anchored to last place in the Eastern Conference. New Jersey (16-7-1), meanwhile, climbed into the top spot in the conference with its third straight victory.
Alex Lyon stopped 18 shots in his first start since November 8. Arseny Gritsyuk scored twice for the Devils, while Nico Hischier, Brenden Dillon, and Paul Cotter added the remaining goals.
The Sabres now head to Minnesota to close their back-to-back set, with puck drop against the Wild scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday.
