Drivers in the Town of Phelps will see a big change starting December 2.
A new four-way directional traffic light is being installed at the intersection of Route 96 and Townline Road — better known to locals as Preemption Street.
The upgrade follows years of crashes and close calls at the busy intersection. Local residents flooded social media with comments after the announcement, with many saying, “It’s about time.”
Some shared personal stories, including one driver who said they were involved in a multi-car crash at that very spot when another vehicle pulled out in front of them. Others voiced concerns that it shouldn’t have taken so long — with one commenter writing, “How many had to die to finally have this light?”
The light aims to improve safety for both local traffic and larger trucks traveling the corridor. While some residents questioned whether a full traffic signal is necessary, many welcomed the move as long overdue.
The light is expected to be fully operational by Tuesday, December 2.
