No. 5 Cornell women’s hockey skated to a 2-2 tie with Syracuse on Tuesday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion, with the Big Red moving to 9-2-1 on the season while the Orange shifted to 6-10-2. Cornell received goals from Karel Prefontaine and Mckenna Van Gelder, while Van Gelder, Piper Grober, and Avi Adam each added an assist. Goaltender Annelies Bergmann turned aside 35 shots to secure the draw.
Both teams traded early power-play chances in the first period, but neither side broke through. Cornell generated steady pressure during its opportunities and continued its strong penalty-killing play on Syracuse’s lone advantage of the frame. The Big Red earned a late power play in the period but the Orange held firm to keep the game scoreless after 20 minutes.
Cornell struck first six minutes into the second when Prefontaine converted to give the Big Red a 1-0 edge. Syracuse answered in the final minutes of the period, capitalizing on a net-front scramble to tie the game at 1-1. Cornell regained the lead early in the third when Van Gelder scored on a power play, but Syracuse responded again midway through the period to even the score.
Neither team could find a winner over the final minutes of regulation or in overtime. Bergmann delivered a key save on a Syracuse three-on-one in the closing seconds of the extra period to preserve the tie. Syracuse ultimately claimed the shootout, converting twice while stopping Cornell’s two attempts.
Cornell heads to Vermont next for a two-game series on November 28–29.
