Syracuse men’s basketball pushed one of the nation’s top teams to the brink Monday but couldn’t finish the upset, falling 78-74 in overtime to No. 3 Houston in its Players Era Festival opener at MGM Grand Garden Arena. The Orange (4–1) led early, trailed by double digits late and forced extra time with an 11-0 surge in the final minutes, but the unbeaten Cougars (6-0) outlasted them.

Syracuse leaned heavily on its depth, with four players reaching double figures. Tyler Betsey provided an immediate lift off the bench with 16 points and four threes, while Kiyan Anthony added 10. William Kyle posted a double-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds and three steals, and J.J. Starling and Naithan George each scored 11. Despite the balanced effort, the Orange left crucial points at the line, shooting just 12-for-29 on free throws.
Houston was powered by a dominant duo, as Emanuel Sharp and Milos Uzan combined for 52 points, each finishing with 26. Syracuse’s defense held the Cougars below 37% shooting, but Houston capitalized during scoring droughts, including a late 9-0 run that built an 11-point lead. Syracuse clawed back behind Starling’s drives, Betsey’s timely shooting and Kyle’s interior play to force overtime, where Houston made just enough plays, and free throws, to escape.
Syracuse opened the game with strong perimeter shooting and led by nine in the first half, but Houston chipped back to take a 37-34 halftime edge. After halftime, the Orange briefly regained the lead before another Cougars surge.
Syracuse returns to action Tuesday against Kansas at 3:30 p.m. ET.
