Freshmen Caton Ryan and Gio DiGiulian each recorded their first multi-point games as the No. 20-ranked Cornell men’s hockey team defeated Brown 4-1 on Friday night at Lynah Rink, marking the Big Red’s sixth straight home opener win.
Ryan scored the first and third goals, while DiGiulian assisted on the opener and netted the game-winner 10:18 into the second period. Junior defenseman George Fegaras contributed assists on both of Ryan’s goals. Freshman goaltender Alexis Cournoyer stopped 27-of-28 shots, with Brown’s Brian Nicholas breaking up the shutout late in the third.
Cornell opened the scoring after a late first-period penalty, with Ryan firing a wrist shot past Brown goaltender Tyler Shea. DiGiulian followed with a goal off a rebound from a point shot by sophomore Michael Fisher. Early in the third, Ryan and junior Ryan Walsh scored 55 seconds apart, extending the Big Red’s lead to 4-0.
The victory extended Cornell’s win streak against Brown to seven games, tying the program’s longest streak against the Bears. The Big Red now hold a 90-44-8 record all-time against Brown and have limited the Bears to under three goals in 12 consecutive matchups. DiGiulian became the first freshman in program history to score two game-winners in the first five games of a season.
Cornell improved to 3-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in ECAC Hockey, while Brown fell to 1-4-0, 1-2-0 in league play.
Next up, Cornell hosts Yale Saturday, November 15, with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. at Lynah Rink.
