Cato man held on $10K bail after butane torch assault

A man is facing felony charges after deputies say he struck a woman in the face with a butane torch tank during a violent domestic incident in the Town of Cato.

Daniel J. Root, 56, of Cato, was arrested on Nov. 6 and charged with second-degree assault, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and two counts of fourth-degree criminal mischief, according to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the scene just after 3 p.m. and found a woman with head and facial injuries. Investigators say Root attacked her and destroyed her phone while she was trying to call 911. The woman managed to escape and ran to a neighbor’s home for help. She was later treated at a hospital.

Root was located at his residence, taken into custody without incident, and held at the Cayuga County Jail on $10,000 cash bail or $15,000 bond. He is due in Cato Town Court on Nov. 12 at 6 p.m.
