The Cornell men’s hockey team fell 2-1 to Dartmouth on Saturday night at Thompson Arena, suffering its first ECAC Hockey loss of the season.
The Big Green (4-0-0, 2-0-0 ECAC) jumped out to an early lead when Hayden Stavroff scored a power-play goal midway through the first period, extending his goal streak to four games. Dartmouth doubled its advantage less than two minutes into the second on a tally from defenseman Matt Fusco. Cornell (2-2-0, 1-1-0) challenged the goal for offside, but the call stood.
Freshman forward Reegan Hiscock brought the Big Red within one midway through the second, scoring his first collegiate goal just seconds after a penalty expired. Classmate Connor Arseneault earned his first career point with an assist on the play. Cornell continued to push in the final period, outshooting Dartmouth 11-9, but could not find the equalizer.
Freshman goaltender Alexis Cournoyer made 24 saves for the Big Red, while Dartmouth’s Emmett Croteau stopped 23 shots, including 11 in the third period. Cornell went 0-for-4 on the power play, while Dartmouth converted once on four chances.
The Big Green’s penalty kill sealed the win, holding off a 6-on-4 Cornell advantage in the final 34 seconds. The loss marked Dartmouth’s third straight victory in the series.
Cornell returns to Lynah Rink next weekend to begin a four-game homestand against Brown on Friday, November 15, and Yale on Saturday, November 16.
