Police in Bath say a man armed with a knife was arrested after refusing to surrender during a tense standoff at an apartment on Pine Street.
Officers responded to the scene around 1:17 p.m. on November 3 after a report of a man threatening residents with a knife. The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Robert E. Wood, did not live at the address but was still inside the home when officers arrived.
Police say the residents had safely exited and allowed officers inside. Once inside, officers found Wood holding a large knife. They tried using de-escalation and negotiation tactics, but Wood refused to drop the weapon and was considered an immediate threat.
Officers then used a less-lethal shotgun, firing two bean bag rounds that struck Wood and allowed them to disarm and arrest him without further incident.
Wood, who police say was under the influence of dangerous drugs, was taken to a local hospital for treatment and a mental health evaluation. After his release, he was charged with menacing a police officer and criminal possession of a weapon — both Class D felonies. He is also a four-time convicted felon.
Wood was processed and taken to the Steuben County Jail, where he remains held for arraignment.
