Waterloo man charged after firing shotgun within village limits

A local man was charged with unlawfully discharging a firearm Saturday morning after police say he fired two shotgun rounds while duck hunting on the canal inside the Village of Waterloo.

According to the Waterloo Police Department, 52-year-old Shawn J. Sweeney was arrested around 8:13 a.m. on November 1. Officers say he fired a 12-gauge Mossberg shotgun while within the village boundaries, which is a violation of Local Law 171-4 related to firearms and explosives.

The incident happened along the canal, where local law prohibits the discharge of firearms.

Sweeney was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Waterloo Court at a later date. No injuries were reported.
