The Hobart men’s soccer team erupted for six goals from six different players to secure the Liberty League’s top seed with a 6-2 victory over Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon. Senior Quinn Phillips led the charge with a goal and two assists as the Statesmen closed the regular season unbeaten at 11-0-5 (6-0-3 Liberty). It marks Hobart’s best record entering postseason play since 2008.
After RPI grabbed an early lead in the 20th minute on Thomas Corcoran’s goal, Hobart ended its 226-minute scoring drought when Brady Leitner buried his ninth goal of the year in the 30th minute off a feed from Daniel Spataro. Just minutes later, Phillips’ corner kick found Noah Fischer, who scored his first collegiate goal to put the Statesmen ahead. Seventy seconds after that, Steven Pickering added his first of the season, and first-year Gabe Smith made it 4-1 before halftime.
The Statesmen kept rolling in the second half, as Tommy Broderick netted his first collegiate goal and Phillips capped the scoring with his fifth of the year. Corcoran scored his second for RPI in the 81st minute to close the game at 6-2.
Senior goalkeeper Tommy Chyzowych made four saves in 72 minutes to earn the win.
Hobart will host a Liberty League semifinal on Friday, November 7, against the winner of Tuesday’s Clarkson–Union quarterfinal.
