Union Springs pushes back against NYSEG rate hikes

The Village of Union Springs is taking a public stand against a proposed utility rate hike that has residents and local leaders sounding the alarm.

In a recently adopted resolution, the Village Board formally opposed the rate increases proposed by New York State Electric & Gas Corporation (NYSEG). The resolution was sent to the New York State Department of Public Service and officially acknowledged on October 8 by Public Service Commission Chair Rory M. Christian.

Local officials say the move is about protecting families and small businesses from what they see as unreasonable utility costs.

“The Village Board remains committed to standing up for our residents and businesses to ensure fair and reasonable utility rates,” the village wrote in a public notice.

The opposition comes as many customers voice frustration not just with rising prices but with ongoing service issues. One commenter on the village’s Facebook post wrote that she’s had recurring billing problems with NYSEG for years, despite using autopay.

Others urged nearby towns and county leaders to follow suit, calling for a united front across Cayuga County.

“This affects everyone whether you know it or not,” one resident posted. “These astronomical rates affect EVERYONE.”

The Union Springs board said it plans to continue monitoring the case and will keep the public informed as more information becomes available.
