Syracuse football (3-6, 1-5 ACC) returned to the JMA Wireless Dome Friday night for a Halloween matchup against North Carolina (3-5, 1-3 ACC), but it was anything but pretty, as the Orange fell 27-10 in a sloppy contest.
The offense was a mess from start to finish, managing just 147 total yards, including 108 on the ground. Yasin Willis led the way with 61 yards on 15 carries, while walk-on quarterback Joseph Filardi made his first career appearance and struggled mightily, completing four of 18 passes for 39 yards. The passing game was inconsistent and turnover-prone, leaving the Orange unable to sustain drives.
Syracuse’s only bright spot came from the defense, as Anwar Sparrow scooped up a fumble and raced 51 yards for a touchdown, also recording two tackles for loss. Beyond that, the unit couldn’t contain North Carolina’s big plays.
The Tar Heels (3-5, 1-3 ACC) pounded the ground game for 209 yards, led by Demon June’s 101-yard touchdown. Quarterback Josh Lopez connected on a 72-yard strike to June and hit Jordan Shipp for another score, while North Carolina added a field goal to take command.
