Marcus Whitman health center wins ‘Champions of Change’ award

The Marcus Whitman School-Based Health Center just earned one of the top honors in New York education — less than a year after opening its doors.

On October 14, the New York State School Board Association will present the “Champions of Change” award to celebrate the groundbreaking partnership between Mosaic Health and the Marcus Whitman School District. The award will be handed out during the district’s school board meeting in Rushville.

The health center, located inside Marcus Whitman schools, offers medical, dental, and mental health care to any enrolled student — no matter their income or insurance status. That means kids can get help without missing class or traveling long distances.

“This is about removing barriers,” said Denise Burgen, MBA, RN, Chief Operating Officer at Mosaic Health. “We’re proud to be part of a program that’s making a real difference.”

Local providers from Mosaic Health staff the center, including:

  • Jessica Frazo, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner
  • Kellie Albert, RN, Program Director
  • Dr. Melissa Copella, DDS, Chief Dental Officer
  • Kimberly Thompson, Dental Hygienist
  • Lora Hopkins, Lead Dental Assistant
  • Carla Freeland, LPN
  • Shelli Altopp-Miller, Licensed Clinical Social Worker
