NYSEG and RG&E honored for hurricane response

Two New York utility companies just picked up a national award for helping restore power after Hurricane Helene.

New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) were recognized with the Edison Electric Institute’s Emergency Response Award for their role in the post-storm recovery.

More than 50 lineworkers from NYSEG and RG&E traveled south to assist after the hurricane. Crews worked for 12 days, replacing poles, running new wires, and clearing downed trees. They also helped reopen roads and repair damaged infrastructure.

Company leaders said the award reflects their commitment to service — both in New York and beyond.

“When disaster strikes, having mutual aid is critical,” said NYSEG and RG&E CEO Trish Nilsen. “It’s a privilege to offer support to utilities in other states in their time of need.”

The award is presented twice a year to electric companies that respond to major service disruptions caused by extreme weather. Winners are chosen by a panel of judges through an international nomination process.

NYSEG and RG&E are both subsidiaries of Avangrid, which operates utilities and energy projects across the country. As storms become more frequent and severe, the companies say they’re focused on strengthening the grid and improving emergency response.
