New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso confirmed Sunday that he will decline his 2026 player option and become a free agent once the offseason officially begins. The announcement came shortly after the Mets were eliminated from postseason contention.
Alonso, 30, would forgo a guaranteed $24 million salary to test the market again. He first reached free agency last winter but returned to New York in February on a two-year, $54 million deal that included the opt-out clause.
The first baseman turned in one of the best seasons of his career in 2025, appearing in all 162 games and posting a .272/.347/.524 line with 38 homers and 126 RBI. In August, he eclipsed Darryl Strawberry to become the franchise’s all-time home run leader.
Alonso has been a central figure during a period of limited postseason success, just two playoff trips in seven years. He said his next contract will prioritize a chance to win. “I want to be on top of the mountain. I want to win a World Series,” Alonso told the media.
Alonso’s decision could reshape the Mets’ offseason plans and signal another potential roster shake-up. Star closer Edwin Díaz also holds an opt-out clause for this winter but has not yet announced whether he will exercise it.
