A Canandaigua man was taken into custody Friday after police say he skipped multiple court appearances related to an animal cruelty charge.
Phillip R. Schmidt, 31, was arrested around 2 p.m. at his home on Beeman Street. Officers served a bench warrant issued by Canandaigua City Court after Schmidt failed to show up for his scheduled hearings.
The original charge stems from an August 2 incident, when a humane society investigation found Schmidt had abandoned his dog, “Scarlett,” at a residence. He was charged with abandonment of an animal — a Class A misdemeanor under New York’s Agriculture and Markets Law.
After his arrest Friday, Schmidt was taken to the Ontario County Jail, where he’s being held pending arraignment.
