New sports programs coming to Newark youth after $22,500 grant

A new grant will bring girls flag football, youth soccer, cross country, and track and field to the Alex Eligh Community Center next spring.

The $22,500 grant was awarded by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services and approved by the Wayne County Board of Supervisors through the Wayne County Youth Bureau.

“These new opportunities will help us reach more kids in our community,” said Center Director Braxton Guy. “This grant lets us expand in a big way while continuing to strengthen what we already offer.”

The four programs — all first-time additions — will launch in spring 2026. The goal is to provide more inclusive, active spaces for youth outside of school.

“Our mission has always been to reach youth of all interests and backgrounds,” Guy said. “Every young person should have a place to belong, grow, and stay active.”

Newark Mayor Jonathan Taylor added that the funding will make a big impact. “It will allow more participation and engagement,” he said.
