A 12-year-old boy died and his grandmother was hospitalized after a house fire Friday morning in Penn Yan, according to first responders.
The boy called 911 around 7:30 a.m. after waking to flames. He tried to alert his 78-year-old grandmother, but both were overcome by smoke. Fire crews rescued them, but the child later died at a Syracuse hospital. A family dog also perished.
Investigators say the fire started in the refrigerator’s wiring. Multiple departments assisted at the scene.
