An early morning fire alarm on Bartnick Road brought a quick response from multiple departments Thursday—but luckily, the smoke-filled home wasn’t the result of a full-blown fire.
Just after 7:30 a.m., Cayuga County 911 dispatched the Genoa Volunteer Fire Department to the scene for a possible chimney fire. According to GFD, Car 1 arrived within minutes and determined the source was a malfunctioning pellet stove, not a chimney fire.
With the threat downgraded, only Genoa Engine 1, Tanker 1, and King Ferry Fire Department’s Tanker 1 continued to the scene. Units from Southern Cayuga Instant Aid, Inc., Scipio Fire Department, and Moravia Fire Department were called off and returned to service.
Genoa and King Ferry crews cleared the scene in under 30 minutes.
In a reminder to the public, GFD noted the return of cooler temperatures and encouraged residents to check their smoke and CO detectors and have heating systems inspected before fall fully sets in.
