Deputies charged a woman following an investigation that uncovered nearly $3,000 in improperly collected public assistance.
Bethany E. Hapeman, 30, of Campbell, was arrested Sept. 8 by investigators with the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office. Officials say she submitted a false document to the county’s Department of Social Services between March 12 and June 30.
As a result, Hapeman allegedly received $2,983 in benefits she wasn’t eligible for.
She’s facing four felony charges:
– Offering a false instrument for filing
– Falsifying business records
– Welfare fraud in the fourth degree
– Grand larceny in the fourth degree
Hapeman was released with an appearance ticket. She’s scheduled to return to Village of Bath Court at a later date.
The sheriff’s office credited the county Department of Social Services Fraud and Legal Affairs Unit and the District Attorney’s Office for helping with the investigation.
