Lyme disease cases in Ontario County have skyrocketed from 33 in 2021 to nearly 300 this year — and officials say deer are a big reason why, according to the Democrat and Chronicle.
City leaders in Canandaigua are launching a local study to tackle both rising tick-borne illnesses and frequent deer-related car crashes. Education is the first step, but wider action on deer control may follow.
Officials also warned about anaplasmosis, another tick-borne illness that’s harder to spot and can be deadly, especially for older adults. A county meeting on the issue is set for Sept. 8.
