William Smith and St. Mary’s (MD) battled to a 0-0 draw Saturday afternoon in their first-ever meeting. The Herons moved to 2-0-1, while the Seahawks stand at 2-0-2.
William Smith dominated possession, finishing with a 26-4 shot advantage and 11 corner kicks. Still, St. Mary’s goalkeeper Kyleigh Bland was outstanding, playing all 90 minutes and making eight saves to keep the match even.
The Herons generated multiple quality chances, especially in the first half, outshooting the Seahawks 13-1. Charlotte Brown forced an early diving save, and Rachel Lee nearly scored in the 40th minute, but Bland tipped the shot over the bar. Sofia Carney had two close-range attempts blocked just before halftime.
St. Mary’s best opportunity came in the 51st minute when Sidney Shaw’s shot was stopped by William Smith keeper Maggie Goerke. The Herons nearly found the winner in the second half as Julia Accioly struck the post in the 68th minute and Grace Metzler sent a shot just high from inside the box. Bland sealed the clean sheet with two saves in the final minute.
William Smith returns to action Sunday at noon against Salisbury.
