Women and girls across Long Island will get a chance to cast a line and learn new outdoor skills at the sixth annual Women’s Fishing Expo on Saturday, September 13, hosted at Connetquot River State Park Preserve in Islip.
The event, run by the New York State DEC and State Parks, is free and open to all — but aims to introduce more women and girls to the sport of fishing in a supportive, hands-on environment.
Learn to fish from the pros
Held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the expo features instruction from experienced women anglers and fisheries professionals. Participants can try everything from fly casting and knot-tying to learning about fish management, hatchery tours, and even casting on the famous Connetquot River. Fly fishing activities are limited to those aged 16 and older.
This year’s event also includes networking opportunities with women-owned fishing businesses and clubs.
“The Women’s Fishing Expo has introduced hundreds to fishing,” said DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos. “It’s about building confidence, sharing knowledge, and inspiring more people to get offline and outside.”
State Parks Commissioner Randy Simons echoed that goal: “Fishing is a great way to take a break from daily stress and enjoy the outdoors. We’re proud to offer this again with DEC.”
How to register
This rain-or-shine event is free, but spots are limited, and pre-registration is required by September 8.
A $8 vehicle use fee will be in effect at the park. Parking is free for Empire Passport holders.
Part of a bigger outdoor push
The expo supports Governor Hochul’s “Get Offline, Get Outside” campaign, aimed at encouraging New Yorkers — especially youth and families — to spend more time outdoors and away from screens.
