Waterfowl hunters will need to make other plans this month as major construction closes part of Harwood Lake in Cattaraugus County.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) says all waterfowl hunting is temporarily prohibited on the main impoundment and dam at Harwood Lake and the surrounding Multiple Use Area through September 25.
The restriction is tied to ongoing dam rehabilitation work aimed at improving safety and infrastructure. According to the DEC, the project includes:
- Rebuilding the dam embankment
- Installing a new spillway
- Adding wave wash protection
- Clearing and reinforcing the auxiliary overflow spillway
- Restoring nearby wetlands
Crews will also work in areas below the dam, prompting the temporary closure for public safety.
While waterfowl hunting on the lake is paused, other areas of the Harwood Lake Multiple Use Area remain open. That includes:
- The lake itself
- The main parking lot
- Car-top boat launch areas
However, visitors should know that water access will be limited. The lake has been lowered by approximately 3.5 feet to support the construction, which will reduce opportunities for fishing and other water-based recreation.
Waterfowl hunting in the area is expected to resume for later 2025 seasons once construction wraps up.
