No. 2 William Smith soccer soars past New Paltz to start season 2-0

The second-ranked William Smith soccer team stayed unbeaten with a 3-0 win over SUNY New Paltz on Sunday afternoon at Cozzens Field. The Herons (2-0-0) scored twice in the opening half and never allowed the Hawks (1-1-0) to gain momentum.

Charlotte Brown opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, finishing off a pass from Anna Nichols for her first goal of the year. Senior Julia Bragg doubled the lead just 11 minutes later, lofting a shot over the keeper for her third of the season. Sophomore Lily Pryzwansky capped the scoring in the 74th minute with her first career tally, converting a long pass from Grace Metzler.

Junior goalkeeper Antonia Goerke anchored the defense, stopping four shots for her first collegiate shutout. William Smith outshot New Paltz 20-7 and held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Hawks goalkeeper Jess Centeri kept the scoreline respectable with 10 saves.

The Herons will take their perfect start on the road next weekend, beginning a three-game trip at the Salisbury Classic in Maryland. William Smith faces St. Mary’s (Md.) on Saturday, September 6, with kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
