A bat picked up near the swimming area at Buttermilk Falls State Park last Friday tested positive for rabies, according to 14850.com and Tompkins County Whole Health.
Park staff removed the bat after it was seen behaving oddly. So far, no human contact has been reported — but officials urge anyone who may have touched the bat to call Environmental Health at 607-274-6688.
Health officials warn that even minor contact with bats can carry a rabies risk. Pets should stay current on vaccines, and any exposure should be reported immediately.
