Hobart soccer opened the Drew/FDU Fall Classic with a 2-0 victory over Kean on Friday night, scoring once in each half to advance to Sunday’s championship game at 3 p.m.
Senior Brian Sheehan and sophomore Brady Leitner provided the offense for the Statesmen. Sheehan netted the first goal in the 34th minute after a rebound scramble in front of the net, assisted by first-year Gabe Smith. Leitner added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute with a precise strike into the lower right corner.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jake Hans earned his first collegiate win and a shutout, stopping three shots, while Kean’s Jason Mast recorded six saves in a valiant effort between the posts. Hobart dominated statistically, outshooting the Cougars 22-6 and controlling the corner kick battle 12-3.
The Statesmen have now remained unbeaten in their last seven season openers (6-0-1) and kept a clean sheet in each of their last seven opening matches.
After a day off, Hobart will face Drew at FDU Florham’s Robert T. Shields Field for the tournament championship.
