XLM vs. XRP – Differences, How to Buy, and Partnerships

The global payments industry is long overdue for a refresh. The most commonly used methods to transfer money are slow and expensive. This calls for a change, and blockchain technologies like Stellar Lumens (XLM) and Ripple’s XRP have the potential to modernize the finance world.

I have analyzed both XLM and XRP networks extensively, as an investor and a crypto enthusiast, over the past years. Their evolution through various market cycles have been admirable and the interest toward payment-focused cryptocurrencies and solutions continue to grow.

While XLM targets financial inclusion for underserved populations, XRP focuses on institutional banking relationships. This fundamental difference shapes everything unique between the two projects, and this article will analyze XLM and XRP’s technical specifications, real-world applications, investment potential, and strategic partnerships.

What is XLM (Stellar Lumens)?

Stellar Lumens, XLM, is a decentralized blockchain protocol designed to facilitate cross-border payments and financial inclusion. XLM was launched in 2014, by Jed McCaleb, who was also one of the founders of XRP.

The Stellar network allows near-instantaneous currency exchanges and payments across borders. The project puts a greater emphasis on serving the unbanked and underbanked populations globally, which is estimated to be around 1.7 billion people around the world. As a user, I’ve been spoiled by XLM’s transfer speed. It has made me despise traditional methods even more because they can take days regardless of whether I’m sending money to loved ones, or just depositing cash into a betting app.

XLM, the crypto, serves as a bridge currency for facilitating exchanges between different fiat currencies and as a mechanism for preventing spam on the network. Every Stellar account must maintain a minimum balance of XLM, and each transaction requires a small fee paid in Lumens, around 0.00001 XLM.

What is XRP (Ripple)?

Ripple, XRP, is a blockchain technology that aims to improve institutional payments by solving the inefficiencies plaguing traditional correspondent banking. XRP launched in 2012, and the project has been dubbed as the future of payments for institutions since it’s a major improvement over the classic international transfers that can take three-to-five business days with substantial fees.

Ripple offers three main products:

  • XRapid: Uses XRP for cross-border payments.
  • XCurrent: Allows banks to settle payments without using XRP
  • XVia: an API for payment providers

Some of these products may sound similar to each other, but XCurrent differs from XRapid as it doesn’t force banks to use XRP, which helps drastically with adaptation.

XLM vs. XRP: Key Differences

The XLM vs XRP debate centers on fundamental and technical differences. While each network focuses on solving payment challenges, they both have unique takes on the matter.

How to Buy XLM and XRP

My preferred method for buying both XLM and XRP is through established cryptocurrency exchanges. It’s the most straightforward path from fiat currency to crypto, and the fees are often minimal.

Major exchanges like Coinbase, Kraken, Binance, Bybit, OKX, and Gemini provide regulated, secure environments for purchasing XLM and XRP.

To buy XLM and XRP, you can:

  1. Create an account on a major crypto exchange.
  2. Complete the verification process.
  3. Deposit fiat via a bank transfer, or use your credit/debit card.
  4. Buy XLM or XRP from the open market via limit orders or market orders.

Once you complete the buying process, you can withdraw your XLM and XRP to personal wallets for long-term storage.

Best Wallet to Store XLM and XRP

Trust Wallet is my go-to choice for storing both XLM and XRP. While it may not be every crypto enthusiast’s favorite pick, I keep returning to Trust Wallet because of its simplicity and reliability.

I’ve tested Exodus, MetaMask, Ledger Live, and others, but Trust Wallet remains my favourite. Trust is open source and the wallet supports numerous cryptocurrencies and networks alongside XLM and XRP.

When it comes to hardware wallets to store XLM and XRP, I’d recommend Trezor. While Ledger is also a decent choice, the data leak they had in 2020 has been a red flag for me.

XLM vs XRP FAQs

What is XLM backed by?

XLM isn’t backed by any physical asset or government guarantee. Its value derives from utility within the Stellar network.

How does Stellar work?

The Stellar network automatically finds the best exchange rate across its built-in decentralized exchange to convert currencies and complete transactions efficiently.

XLM can be a good investment for investors looking for exposure to financial inclusion trends. It has a smaller market cap compared to XLM, which can mean higher upside potential, but that also comes with greater volatility to the downside as well.

Is XRP a good investment?

XRP can be a better investment for risk averse investors compared to XLM. XRP has a stronger position among institutional players and typically ranks in the crypto top 10 by market cap. XRP also has a history of performing well in bull runs, which makes it worth studying, both in terms of technology and price movements.

Do XRP and XLM have a partnership?
