Hikers heading to the Tupper Lake area can once again explore one of the region’s most popular trails.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced on Friday that the Goodman Mountain trail has officially reopened after being closed since June. The trail, located in the Horseshoe Lake Wild Forest, was shut down due to the presence of a bull moose exhibiting unusual behavior.
DEC officials said the moose’s condition worsened significantly over time, ultimately leading to a decision to humanely euthanize the animal. The DEC’s Wildlife Health Unit is now working with the Cornell Wildlife Health Lab to determine what caused the illness. Test results are pending.
Visitors are reminded to follow the Leave No Trace principles while enjoying the outdoors. That includes staying on marked trails, packing out all trash, respecting wildlife, and being mindful of others.
