New York State will begin mailing one-time inflation refund checks of up to $400 to eligible residents in mid-October 2025. You do not need to apply to receive this stimulus payment; the state will send it automatically if you qualify based on your 2023 tax return.
NY Inflation Refund Checks Are Coming Soon: Here’s What to Know
As New Yorkers continue to deal with higher costs, the state government is providing some relief. The 2025-2026 state budget created a new program for one-time payments. Consequently, over 8 million residents will receive a check this fall to help offset increased sales taxes caused by inflation.
When Will the Checks Arrive?
New York will begin mailing the checks in mid-October 2025. However, you should not expect them all to arrive at once. The state will mail the large volume of checks over several weeks. Therefore, your neighbor might get their check before or after you do. Officials have also confirmed these will be paper checks mailed to your address on file, not direct deposits.
How Much Money Will You Get?
The payment amount depends entirely on your 2023 New York Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) and your filing status.
For those filing as Single, Married Filing Separately, or Head of Household:
- You will receive $200 if your AGI was $75,000 or less.
- You will receive $150 if your AGI was between $75,001 and $150,000.
For those filing as Married Filing Jointly or Qualified Surviving Spouse:
- You will receive $400 if your AGI was $150,000 or less.
- You will receive $300 if your AGI was between $150,001 and $300,000.
Who Is Eligible for the Payment?
To receive a check, you must meet all of the following conditions based on your 2023 tax year:
- You filed a New York State resident income tax return (Form IT-201).
- Your income fell within the qualifying thresholds listed above.
- No one else claimed you as a dependent on their tax return.
The most important point for residents to know is that no action is needed. If you are eligible, the New York Department of Taxation and Finance will automatically send your check to the address it has on file.
