Starting in October 2025, more than 8.2 million households across New York will receive one-time inflation refund checks—no applications, sign-ups, or paperwork required. The checks, worth up to $400, are part of the 2025–2026 New York State budget and aim to return a portion of the state’s increased sales tax revenue back to residents impacted by rising costs.
Who’s eligible?
To receive a check, you must:
- File a 2023 New York State Resident Income Tax Return (Form IT-201)
- Report income within the qualifying thresholds
- Avoid being claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return
No age limits apply. If you meet the criteria, the Tax Department will send your check by mail.
Refund amounts based on income and filing status:
| Filing Status | 2023 NY Adjusted Gross Income | Refund Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Single | $75,000 or less | $200 |
| $75,001 – $150,000 | $150 | |
| Married Filing Joint | $150,000 or less | $400 |
| $150,001 – $300,000 | $300 | |
| Other statuses | Within same thresholds | $150–$400 |
When do checks arrive?
The Tax Department will begin mailing checks in mid-October and continue through November. Since the state sends checks in waves:
- Mailings won’t follow any zip code or regional order
- You may receive your check before or after your neighbors
- The department won’t provide tracking or delivery timelines
Why send these checks?
Governor Kathy Hochul proposed the refund as part of the FY 2026 budget to ease pressure from inflation and high living costs:
“This is your money, and we’re putting it back in your pockets,” she said.
The refund joins other relief measures in the budget, including:
- A middle class tax cut (lowest level in 70 years)
- An expanded child tax credit (up to $1,000 per child)
- Free school meals for all public school students (saving families ~$1,600 annually)
