The New York Yankees blew multiple leads Friday night, falling 13-12 to the Miami Marlins at LoanDepot Park in one of their most shocking and crushing defeats of the season.
Carlos Rodón carried a no-hitter into the fourth, but then lost his command, leading to five walks and a high pitch count. A pair of Miami homers chipped away at a 6-0 Yankees lead.
Giancarlo Stanton’s 116-mph, three-run blast in the fourth and Cody Bellinger’s two-run single in the fifth built the early cushion, while Trent Grisham’s three-run homer in the seventh seemed to put New York back in control at 9-4.
The momentum flipped quickly when newly acquired relievers faltered. Jake Bird allowed a grand slam to Kyle Stowers, and David Bednar surrendered a game-tying homer to Javier Sanoja as part of a six-run Marlins rally that put Miami ahead, 10-9.
Anthony Volpe’s solo shot in the eighth tied it again, and in the ninth, Ryan McMahon singled home the go-ahead run before Volpe added an RBI double for a 12-10 lead. But Camilo Doval’s Yankees debut turned disastrous in the bottom half, a two-run single by Xavier Edwards tied the game, and Agustin Ramirez’s infield hit brought home the winning run.
The Yankees finished with 14 hits, including multi-hit efforts from Volpe, Stanton, and McMahon, but their bullpen surrendered nine runs over the final 4.1 innings.
The Yankees (60-50) look to bounce back on Saturday at 4:10 p.m., with Cam Schlittler starting against Miami’s Eury Pérez.
