Not much went right for the New York Mets on Tuesday night in San Diego as they fell 7-1 to the Padres behind a quiet night on offense and a bullpen collapse.
Sean Manaea gave the Mets another quality outing, allowing just one run over five innings. The left-hander settled in after a leadoff run in the first, retiring 12 straight batters to finish his night. Though Manaea lobbied to return for the sixth, manager Carlos Mendoza went to the bullpen instead, a move that backfired quickly.
Jose Buttó was hit hard, surrendering five runs over 1.1 innings. Chris Devenski allowed a crushing three-run homer to Manny Machado that broke the game open in the seventh.
The Mets tied the game briefly in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Starling Marte, who entered after Juan Soto exited with a foot contusion. But that was all the offense could muster. New York managed just four hits, two of them by Mark Vientos, who extended his hitting streak to eight games.
San Diego’s bullpen shut the door with five dominant innings, holding the Mets to just two baserunners the rest of the way.
Soto had X-rays on his foot that came back negative and he is day-to-day, Mendoza announced after the game.
Clay Holmes will face Yu Darvish in the series finale on Wednesday as New York (62-46) looks to avoid being swept. The first pitch is set for 4:10 p.m.
