Syracuse man arrested after second shooting in Auburn within hours

Authorities arrested a Syracuse man in connection with a shooting that occurred just hours after a fatal shooting in Auburn, according to police.

Officers were already working a homicide scene when they were dispatched around 12:53 a.m. on July 27 to investigate additional gunshots near State Street and Perrine Street. Multiple shots were reportedly fired, and a person of interest was quickly detained in the area.

Authorities confirmed that at least six rounds had been discharged and two individuals had sustained gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to Upstate University Hospital with injuries considered non-life-threatening.

The detained individual was identified as 35-year-old Leon D. Shorter of 818 Tallman Street, Syracuse. He was arrested and charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class C felony.

This latest shooting followed a separate homicide just hours earlier at the Oak Creek Town Homes, where one man was killed and another arrested for second-degree murder.

Due to the volume of individuals present at both crime scenes, several agencies assisted Auburn Police, including the Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office, Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, and others.
