Bread recall issued for popular loaves sold at Walmart, Kroger

A multi-state bread recall is underway after Hartford Bakery announced that several batches of its Lewis Bake Shop bread may contain undeclared hazelnuts—a serious health risk for people with nut allergies.

Hartford Bakery distributed approximately 883 loaves of Lewis Bake Shop Artisan Style 1/2 Loaf bread with incorrect packaging that did not declare the presence of hazelnuts, according to a notice from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Health risks and reported reactions

The undeclared hazelnuts pose a serious health threat to individuals with tree nut allergies. Hartford Bakery confirmed that one consumer experienced digestive discomfort after eating the bread, although no major illnesses have occurred. Others said they noticed the presence of nuts before consuming it.

The packaging does include a general tree nut allergy warning, but hazelnuts were not specifically listed, which triggered the formal recall.

Cause of the recall

An internal review at Hartford Bakery found that a packaging mix-up led to the error. The company mistakenly used labels intended for a different bread product, failing to disclose that hazelnuts were present in this batch.

What to do if you purchased this bread

Consumers who purchased the recalled bread are advised to:

  • Stop eating it immediately
  • Return it to the place of purchase for a full refund
  • Contact Hartford Bakery at 1-812-425-4642, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. CT for further questions.
